EBT/SNAP:

Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) is an electronic system that automates the delivery, redemption and reconciliation of issued public assistance benefits.  EBT is the method for distributing the federal SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits and the California Food Assistance Program benefits. Only selected farmers’ markets may accept the EBT card and the La Cienega and Kaiser WLA markets are approved locations.

An EBT recipient can use their card at our farmers’ market EBT table by first deciding how much money to withdraw from their account; a swipe of the EBT card on our wireless credit card machine, provided to us by the California Department of Health, will process the transaction. Wooden nickels (authorized by the Department of Heath) will be given to the EBT shopper in one dollar denominations to use for their purchases.

Wooden nickels do not expire and any remaining may be used at another future visit. The La Cienega Farmers’ Market’s EBT wooden nickel can only be used at our farmers’ market.

WIC (Women, Infants, and Children):

The WIC program provides nutrition education, breast-feeding education and referral services to health care providers. This State Department also has a summer farmers’ market voucher program that provides its recipients with $20 in vouchers for the mother and eligible children to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables and cut herbs from WIC-authorized farmers at approved farmers’ markets in California. The Farmers’ Market Voucher is good from May 1st to November 30th of each calendar year and expires if not used within this period of time. These vouchers are distributed to qualified recipients by the local WIC office.

Senior FMNP:

The Senior FMNP (Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program) is available to low-income seniors who are at least 60 years old and have household incomes of not more than 185% of the federal poverty income guidelines.  These vouchers are good for the purchase of fresh fruits, vegetables, cut herbs and honey and are redeemable only at authorized farmers’ markets. The Senior WIC coupon is distributed by the Department of Parks and Recreation where they then pass on the vouchers to local senior citizen centers. The amount a recipient recieves may vary from each senior center.

To acquire additional information about either of these programs please contact your local WIC office or the SFMNP office.

Frequent Shopper Program:

In an effort to reward our family of shoppers who support our farmers we have created a frequent shopper stamp card that can be acquired at our EBT table or from the market managers.  In an effort to support our local farmers, these cards are only for the purchase of agricultural products. With your weekly purchase of $5 or more, bring proof of your purchase to the EBT table and get your card stamped; after eight stamps the card is full and you will receive five market dollars good for purchases with any farmer or hot/cold food vendor. Please see the participation rules on the back of the cards.  This program is based on the honor system and it is the managers right to withdraw privileges to participate.
